Fan of Truck-Mounted Systems?

S

o, you're a fan of truck-mounted systems? Those are as obsolete as a dinosaur. Sure, they have advantages, but mostly to the person doing the work, not the person getting their carpet cleaned! First, let's look at what carpet manufacturers have to say on the subject: Nothing. That's right, nothing! Now that they've finally gone into the laboratory on their own and examined the subject, they're not so picky about what equipment is used, but they DO care that their product (your carpet) gets rinsed with fresh water as the final step!

And if you must know, the equipment I use is the first any carpet manufacturer has recommended and endorsed, but that's because it's economical. If you want to use a true fresh water rinse with a truck-mounted system that's fine, but do you have any idea what that would cost?? 40 cents per square foot. And it still wouldn't be quite as good as what I do.

Why Fresh Water Rinse Matters

The benefits of a fresh water rinse are pretty obvious. Just think of a washing machine, or washing your hands, or washing your hair! You wouldn't think of shampooing your hair, toweling it off, blow drying it etc. without rinsing it first, would you? That's ridiculous! Yet that's basically what carpet cleaners have gotten away with for decades, and you're still getting that if you choose a different carpet cleaner, as no one else in this area offers a fresh water rinse.

Not only does a fresh water rinse remove residue from the cleaning process itself, but it gets out more dirt. Under a microscope, carpet manufacturers discovered something they weren't expecting: a fresh water rinse ALSO removes more of the irritants that collect in carpet like bacteria, fungus, pollution including cigarette smoke, and pollen. In fact, you can't seriously consider that you're cleaning for health unless you're finishing the cleaning process with a fresh water rinse!

Problems With Truck-Mounted Systems

Let’s compare my process to what you’re used to by shedding some light on problems with using a truck as a power plant, bringing hoses in, and leaving a door or window open somewhere:

  1. Pollution Concerns – The EPA wants to ban it entirely. I use less than 15 amps of clean electric power. The fact that I can accomplish a consistent extraction rate of over 94% is a HUGE feat of engineering!
  2. Suction Variation – Suction varies greatly from many factors, especially elevation down from the truck (e.g., basements). The moving air loses power to pick water UP that far, leaving dirt behind. My source of suction stays a constant distance of less than 12 inches from the work surface.
  3. Filter Clogging – Suction is lost as filters clog. On truck-mounts, checking filters wastes 5–10 minutes. On my system, I see debris in real-time, clean it immediately, and see stains and dirt coming out – which helps me know when your carpet is actually clean and prevents over-wetting.
  4. Aging Equipment – Truck-mount blowers beat themselves to death over time. Many operators use worn-out equipment. I can restore my suction to new factory specs by replacing one $130 part. It’s more economical and consistent.

So if you see a truck-mounted operator advertising an extraction rate comparable to mine, they can’t deliver that consistently. Real-life conditions in YOUR home are too unpredictable.

Myths About Truck-Mounted Cleaning

Let’s uncover a few common myths:

1. "The Powerful RX-20"

This phrase usually means the owner knows he can’t rely on human effort alone, especially from tired workers. RX-20s do the physical work but disrupt the balance of solution application and extraction. A 94% extraction rate truck mount drops to below 90% with these. Still good—but can’t beat me! My results are 100% consistent, with no variables.

2. Super-Heated Water Cleans Better

Only partly true. High temps reduce chemical use, not improve cleaning. They heat water to 190–250°F to avoid leaving cleaner in the carpet—because without rinsing, all that cleaner stays. I custom blend a solution for your exact needs, and rinse it out fully. I can use more cleaner if needed, and flush it all out. You get superior results.

3. A Two-Man Crew Is Better

Don't be fooled. Truck-mounted companies use two-man crews because it’s cheaper than extra machine time. That means they value equipment more than employees. I can move anything myself. The only help I need is your hand on fragile electronics during moving—per insurance rules. A helper would only slow me down.

So Why Have I Heard Truck-Mounts Are Best?

If you're fond of truck-mounts, you’ve likely worked as a cleaner, know someone who has, or have heard of the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification). It has long dominated the industry. Until recently, carpet manufacturers just took their word on everything.

The IICRC’s controlling interest is tied to Great Lakes Steamway, a major manufacturer of truck-mounted equipment and chemicals. We're in their territory, and their best equipment is truck-mounted. Their opinions are not unbiased.

The Real Test: Buzz Cohen’s Experience

Buzz Cohen, a respected IICRC instructor, tried to dismiss the equipment I use. He tested it on a flood job—where all you can do is extract water. Usually, a truck-mounted system uses a 100-pound roller to boost extraction. Buzz didn’t use one. He intended to follow up with a Butler truck-mount to clean the carpet.

But guess what?

The carpet dried faster after my equipment extracted the water than after cleaning with the Butler truck-mount. That was not expected. He later tested my equipment in normal situations and declared that it makes other systems obsolete. His word!

Step Into the New Millennium

The only reason truck-mounts dominated for so long was because we lacked an indoor power source. That problem is now solved with modern technology. Isn’t it time you stepped into the new millennium in carpet cleaning?

Would it help if I charged twice as much, like most new tech does? I’d rather charge as little as I can and still make a decent living. I’m not afraid of hard work, and I didn’t go into business to get rich. I want job stability. The way to get that is by offering the best quality for less money than others charge.
